The Northern Gateway Alliance Newmarket team take out the November title for this photo of the first bridge segment being hoisted into place for the new southbound lanes of the Newmarket Viaduct.

Like something off a Bond movie set, the 73 tonne segment was lifted into place by a crane late one night in early September. A further 42 segments are currently being craned into place – see our in-depth article on pages 16-17.
“Installing the first bridge segment was a significant step along the way for the Newmarket Connection,” says Tommy Parker, the NZTA’s state highways manager for Auckland and Northland. “This project involves our team working right alongside a live motorway, with equipment as high as 20 m in the air at times.”
