Work is well under way on Ebert Construction’s project for the design and construction of building works for Drier 4 at Fonterra’s Edendale site in Southland. Edendale is a busy, primary hub site for Fonterra, and will remain fully operational throughout construction.
Standing 56m tall, the milk powder tower will be largest in the world, with a total floor area of 6,176m2. The structure is predominately of precast concrete panel construction with suspended concrete floors and steel platforms.
In addition to the powder tower, the works include a bin room, packing room, and day store, together with alterations and additions to the existing Drier 3 control rooms and amenities.
According to Fonterra CEO, Andrew Ferrier, the new dryer will manufacture regular UHT and instant whole milk powders, and will take the site’s peak processing capacity to over 15 million litres per day.
“This investment is a vote of confidence for Fonterra, and the New Zealand dairy industry. It also recognises Edendale’s reputation for the highest product quality and its particular expertise in powder production,” Mr Ferrier says.
